Path to CO2 neutrality

Our own "Path to CO2 neutrality" project was launched in the summer of 2021, with the aim of achieving CO2 neutrality in emissions from energy consumption (Scope 1+2) by the end of 2024.

This was the start of a fast-paced and challenging journey. NextPharma analysed all its sites and processes in terms of energy vector, use and potential for reducing emissions and consumption. Cooperation and knowledge-sharing involving all skills are the key to finding potential and solutions throughout the company. Sustainable development is a company-wide project.

The NextPharma Group's scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions associated with energy consumption decreased by 17% since 2021. Energy efficiency measures, such as the improvement of heating and cooling systems, air conditioning and compressed air supply, as well as the gradual switch to renewable energy have contributed to this.

The electricity mix and the purchase of natural gas are the determining factors of the total greenhouse gas emissions Scope 1 and 2. Key measures to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions include the implementation of the ambitious program of energy efficiency measures at all locations and the continued switch to renewable energy sources.

Explanation of the emission calculation

Scope 1

Scope 1 emissions are direct emissions which originated from sources owned or controlled by the company. This includes the emissions from combustion of fuel in stationary and mobile assets and facilities, as well as process emissions and fugitive emissions.

Scope 2

Scope 2 emissions are indirect emissions, resulting from the generation of purchased energy. There are two ways to account these emissions. When applying the location-based method the grid-average emission factor data is used for all energy purchased, whereas in the market-based method, emission factors are determined from supplier-specific contracts. NextPharma Group Scope 2 emissions are calculated with a market-based approach.

Our measures for greater sustainability in pharmaceutical production

NextPharma has turned to sustainable sources, designing optimal solutions and tracking results to make success visible and transparent. As part of this approach, we have also just introduced a company-wide EDM (energy data management) that shows the effect of our measures and supports our maintenance activities;

The ship is on course.
