NextPharma Edinburgh: Liquid-Filled Hard Capsule (LFHC) Manufacturing Centre of Excellence

With over 35 years of experience in liquid-filled hard capsule technology and hundreds of compounds formulated for clients across the globe, NextPharma’s Edinburgh site, operating as MW Encap Ltd., is the group’s Centre of Excellence for LFHC development and manufacturing, with specialist capabilities in high-potent API handling, bioavailability enhancement, controlled release, targeted release and abuse-deterrent formulations.

If you are evaluating a CDMO for LFHC or lipid-based capsule manufacturing, discover NextPharma Edinburgh’s core capabilities, regulatory status, facility details, and how to start a conversation with the team.

The site

Primary capabilities

The NextPharma Edinburgh site has been part of NextPharma group since 2021 and is purpose-built for lipid-based formulation and liquid-filled hard capsule manufacturing, with multiple commercial-scale mixing vessels (20 L to 400 L), capsule filling lines and capsule banding equipment (IMA and Qualiseal technology).

Our capacities include filling and banding speeds of approximately 70,000 to 100,000 capsules per hour. Our core technology platform is lipid-based formulation for bioavailability enhancement of BCS class II and IV APIs, in the following core dosage forms:

Flavour and development on site

Development is fully integrated on a single campus: formulation development, analytical development and validation, process development and scale-up, stability testing, and tech transfer from other CDMOs are all available at NextPharma Edinburgh, supporting programmes from pre-clinical feasibility through to commercial manufacture and licensed product supply.

The formulation development lab has representative bench-scale semi-automated capsule filling and banding equipment, replicated in the GMP facility for batches of approximately 2,000 capsules.

LFHC Technology and HPAPI Handling

LFHC technology allows a potent API to be wetted — dispersed or dissolved in a liquid or semi-solid vehicle — rather than processed as a dry powder. Wetting the API suppresses dust generation at the point of handling, reducing airborne particulate and operator exposure, and works alongside NextPharma Edinburgh’s dedicated high-containment suites for high-potent production. For low-dose and highly potent compounds, delivering the API as a homogeneous liquid dispersion also supports accurate dosing and content uniformity, avoiding the segregation risks of dry powder blends. The same wetting behaviour improves the dissolution of poorly water-soluble APIs.

Packaging

On-site packaging capabilities include two commercial-scale blister lines for automated blistering and cartoning, both with thermoform capability and full lid foil printing. Serialisation is available on site alongside the automated application of tamper-evident closures. Keeping filling, printing, packing and serialisation on one campus means a product does not leave the site between manufacture and finished-pack release. Further packaging capabilities, for example into bottles, are available within the NextPharma group network.

Regulatory status

Quality and compliance

Production at NextPharma Edinburgh operates, amongst others, under cGMP and is FDA and MHRA inspected, with approvals from multiple health authorities worldwide for both investigational and commercial drug products.

Site & infrastructure

Facility

The NextPharma Edinburgh site covers 900m² across Units 1 to 8, including 200 m² of future expansion capacity, three cleanrooms, two dedicated high-containment suites and a walk-in strong room for controlled drug substances and products. Product development, process development and scale-up all occur on one site. Analytical capabilities include UHPLC with MS/DAD, HPLC with multiple detection modes, GC with headspace, dissolution (apparatus I, II and III), modulated DSC, laser diffraction particle sizing, FTIR, dynamic vapour sorption and thermogravimetric analysis.
